Through Him Who Gives Me Strength
Bible Text: Philippians 4:12–13"I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
— Philippians 4:13There is a famous verse people put on posters and coffee mugs: "I can do all this through him who gives me strength." It is often read as a promise that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. But the man who wrote it was in prison, and he meant something quieter and sturdier than that.
Just before it, Paul explains what he actually learned. "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances," he says, whether well fed or hungry, in plenty or in want. The strength he is describing is not the power to win or to escape every hardship. It is the strength to stay steady in any of it, full or empty, easy or hard.
That is a fitting place to end a week about strength. God's strength is not mainly for the mountaintop days. It is for the ordinary Tuesday and the hard Friday, for plenty and for want alike. It is the strength to keep showing up, to stay faithful, to keep trusting when little feels certain. Whatever this coming week holds, He gives strength to meet it.
You do not know what the days ahead will bring. You do not have to. The same God who has carried you this far will supply what each new day requires. You can face whatever comes, not because you are strong enough, but through Him who gives you strength.
Reflect on This
- Have you read "I can do all things" as a promise of success, or as strength to stay steady in any circumstance? How does the difference land for you?
- As a new week begins, what unknown are you facing? What would it look like to trust God for strength to meet it, whatever it holds?
Lord, thank You that Your strength is enough for plenty and for want, for the easy days and the hard ones. I do not know what this week holds, but You do. Carry me through it. I can face whatever comes through You who give me strength.
